Travel back in time when you visit the historic Taytay Fort.  This iconic fort was built in 1667 first as a wooden palisade, which was then rebuilt with coral stone in 1721 and completed in 1738.  It was mainly used to defend the town against Muslim warrior-raiders who challenged the Spanish hegemony over the island. It should be understood that the Muslim warriors were attacking the town to regain what used to be part of their kingdom.  The Fort was named Fuerza Santa Isabel de la Paragua in honor of St. Isabel, the mother of St. John the Baptist, the patron Saint of the Spanish Royal family. Visitors to the fortress must pay Php80.00 as an entrance fee. Local tour guides will assist you during your visit.

Opening Hours from April 01-May 05, 2023 – Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, SAT-SUN, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, NO Noon Break. During your visit, you may stay until closing time but please note that admission to the fort is up to thirty minutes before closing time only (5:30 PM).  Off-regular-hour tours may be allowed subject to at least 24 hours of advanced bookings. The 640-hectare Lake Manguao sits in the hilly areas of Taytay south of the town proper. This best-kept secret — one of the Philippines’ most pristine freshwater lakes — was declared as a Municipal Conservation Area and Sustainable Ecotourism Zone for its outstanding biodiversity and high tourism value. Surrounded by lush forest, it is home to 138 species of birds, three lake-endemic fish species, and other numerous globally threatened wildlife. It is ideal for bird watching, short hikes, paddle boating, traditional fishing, and other nature observation activities.

Lake Manguao is known among locals of Taytay as Lake Danao. “Danao” or “danau” is an Indo-Malayan word that means pond, lake, or water body. Hence, it is not surprising that Danao is a common name for several lakes and places in the Philippines e.g., Lake Danao in Ormoc City, Leyte.  However, in an international scientific publication dating back to 1914 that documented the fishes of Lake Manguao, as well as in NAMRIA maps and other globally recognized cartographic descriptions of Palawan, including Google Earth, the lake has always been referred to as Lake Manguao.

This unique name was derived from one of the lake’s many coves, which is locally called “manguao”, by the lake’s pre-World War II inhabitants.  Manguao is a Cuyuno-Tagbanua ancient word that loosely translates to “sad, melancholic, quiet, or serene” place.

Apparently, when American scientists collected fish from Lake Manguao sometime in the early 1900s, they caught their specimens from the cove called “manguao” by the locals, hence the lake was named after that cove. Consequently, the two minnow fish species from the genus Puntius, locally known as “paitan” that they collected from the lake were named after Lake Manguao, Puntius manguaoensis and P. bantolanensis, which was named after the barrio of Bantolan. Both species are Lake Manguao-endemic, meaning they can only be found in Lake Manguao and nowhere else in the world. This makes our lake a globally significant area for freshwater fish biodiversity conservation.

All tours of the lake must be booked through licensed and LGU-registered travel and tour agencies in Taytay. At least one-day advanced booking is preferred.  Overnight camping may be allowed subject to prior arrangement and payment of a Wilderness Pass at the Municipal Tourism Development and Management Office (MTDMO).

Swimming in the lake during summer is not recommended because cyanobacteria blooms occur during the dry season.

For its rich natural resources, the entire Malampaya Sound and its surrounding forest have been declared as a protected area. It’s where you could kayak and spot the critically endangered Irrawaddy dolphin, frolicking amidst artisanal fishermen whose livelihood source is dependent on Malampaya’s fisheries resources. The sound also has many islands and islets where you can enjoy island hopping and snorkeling activities.

The western coast of MSPLS is where the San Vicente Long Beach at Bgy. Binga and Taytay’s most pristine beaches (Minapla Beach) are located. Both are also situated right at the foothills of Mt. Capoas, the highest peak in northern Palawan. Both beaches are easily accessible via the Abongan-Alacalian by-pass road.
